Falcon 2000 vs Challenger 350: Cabin, Range, and Real Cost

The Falcon 2000 vs Challenger 350 conversation comes up almost every week on our desk. A client wants transcontinental capability, a stand-up cabin, and enough runway flexibility to land somewhere interesting — Aspen, Sun Valley, St. Barths on the right day. Both airframes get shortlisted. Both are excellent. They are also very different airplanes built for different missions, and the operator you charter from matters more than the badge on the tail.

What follows is an operator-honest breakdown from someone who has sold, brokered, and flown around this segment for years. No spec-sheet regurgitation. What actually matters when you are the person in seat 2A.

Cabin: super-mid comfort versus large-cabin geometry

The Challenger 350 is a super-midsize jet. The Falcon 2000 — in its current LXS and S variants — is a large-cabin. That single classification difference explains most of what you will feel on board.

The Challenger 350 cabin measures roughly 25 feet 2 inches long, 7 feet 2 inches wide, and 6 feet tall. It is the widest floor in the super-mid class and the reason the airframe has dominated that segment since Bombardier launched it in 2014. Flat floor, eight passengers in a double-club, a proper galley forward, an aft lav with external service. For a four-to-six hour leg it is genuinely comfortable, and the noise signature at cruise is among the quietest in category.

The Falcon 2000LXS gives you a cabin roughly 26 feet 2 inches long, 7 feet 8 inches wide, and 6 feet 2 inches tall. Six extra inches of width does not sound like much on paper. On a red-eye from Teterboro to London it is the difference between sleeping and pretending to sleep. Dassault also gives you a three-zone layout on most configurations — forward four-place club, mid four-place club or divan, aft private area — which means a family of six is not stacked on top of each other for eight hours.

What the cabin actually feels like

The 350 feels like a very well-designed office you can also nap in. The 2000 feels like a small apartment. If your typical trip is two to four passengers on three-to-five-hour legs, the 350 is arguably the better airplane — lower cost, plenty of room, faster to board and turn. If you regularly fly with six-plus people, or you sleep on the airplane, the Falcon's geometry starts to earn its keep.

One detail people miss: the Falcon 2000 has a proper crew rest area and a full galley that supports actual catered service — hot meals plated in flight, not just reheated. On a long leg with a full cabin that matters. Ask any flight department that runs both types.

Range and runway: where the missions diverge

Published range numbers are marketing numbers. Real-world range — four passengers, standard reserves, realistic winds — is what you should be comparing.

The Challenger 350 publishes 3,200 nautical miles at Mach 0.80. Real-world, plan on roughly 2,900 nm with headwinds and a full cabin. That gets you coast-to-coast in the US nonstop westbound about 80% of the year. It does not reliably get you New York to London nonstop. Winter westbound Atlantic crossings? A tech stop at Gander or Bangor is common.

The Falcon 2000LXS publishes 4,000 nautical miles. Real-world with eight passengers, plan closer to 3,600 nm. That opens up Teterboro–London nonstop most of the year, Los Angeles–Honolulu with margin, and gives you a genuinely reliable transatlantic airplane. The 2000S trades some range for better short-field performance and lower acquisition cost.

Runway performance is where the Falcon quietly wins

This is the spec that changes what airports you can actually use. The Falcon 2000LXS is certified into Aspen (KASE) and London City (EGLC) — the latter requiring the steep-approach certification Dassault engineered specifically for it. The 350 is not authorized into London City. It handles Aspen, but with more weight and weather restrictions than the Falcon.

Balanced field length for the Falcon 2000LXS is around 4,325 feet at max takeoff weight. The Challenger 350 needs roughly 4,835 feet. That 500-foot delta puts several interesting airports on the table for the Falcon that the 350 has to think harder about — St. Barths (SBH) remains a King Air airport regardless, but places like Telluride, Sun Valley in summer heat, or the shorter Caribbean strips open up differently.

If your travel pattern includes mountain resorts, Caribbean island hops, or European city airports with restrictions, the Falcon 2000 is the more flexible tool. If you mostly fly major metros — Teterboro, Van Nuys, Palm Beach, Aspen in reasonable conditions — the 350 will do everything you need.

Operating cost and charter economics

I will not quote hourly rates. Rates move with fuel, positioning, operator, season, and the specific tail. What I will tell you is how the cost structures actually differ, because that shapes what you should expect on a quote.

The Challenger 350 burns roughly 235 gallons per hour of Jet-A at long-range cruise. Twin Honeywell HTF7350 engines, both with strong reliability records and reasonable maintenance program economics through JSSI or MSP Gold. The airframe itself is relatively young — first delivery 2014 — so most 350s in the charter market are still on original engines with clean maintenance histories.

The Falcon 2000LXS burns roughly 265 gallons per hour at long-range cruise with its Pratt & Whitney PW308C engines. Three cabin zones, more systems, a heavier airframe (max takeoff weight around 42,800 lbs versus the 350's 40,600 lbs). More airplane, more fuel, more maintenance. The delta on a four-hour leg is meaningful but not enormous. The delta on a nine-hour transatlantic is where you feel it.

What actually drives your invoice

On charter, the meaningful cost drivers are:

  • Positioning. If the aircraft has to fly empty to get to you, you are paying for that time. A Challenger 350 based in the northeast quoted for a Florida trip in January is a very different number than one already sitting in West Palm.
  • Minimum daily requirements. Both airplanes typically carry a two-hour daily minimum on charter. A short hop with a two-day overnight can cost more per flight hour than a longer leg.
  • International fees. Overflight permits, handling, customs, landing fees at premium airports (LFMN, EGLC, LSGG) — these can add up faster than the hourly rate on a European trip.
  • Federal Excise Tax. 7.5% on domestic US charter, and it applies to the full invoice, not just flight time.

On a like-for-like domestic quote, expect the Falcon 2000 to run measurably higher than the 350 — it is a larger, thirstier, more complex airplane. Whether that premium is worth it depends entirely on your mission. Get a real comparison built for your actual trip, not a generic rate card.

Which airplane for which trip

A few honest matchups from our desk.

Teterboro to Aspen, four passengers, February. Either airplane works. The 350 will be easier to source and lower cost. The Falcon gives you more weather margin into KASE and a more comfortable cabin for the return east against winter winds. I would fly the 350 unless the group is six-plus.

Van Nuys to Honolulu, six passengers. Falcon 2000, without hesitation. The 350 can technically make it in ideal conditions but you are planning around a tech stop half the year and the cabin is small for a five-hour overwater leg with six people.

New York to London, four passengers. Falcon 2000. The 350 will require a tech stop westbound reliably and eastbound in winter. That is 90 minutes on the ground at Gander that you did not want.

Dallas to Cabo, four passengers, weekend. 350 all day. Short leg, easy airport, no reason to pay for the larger cabin.

Palm Beach to Nice for the Monaco Grand Prix weekend in late May. Falcon 2000. Transatlantic range, the cabin geometry for a nine-hour leg, and the runway performance if you decide to reposition into a smaller Côte d'Azur field. The operator matters more than the type

One last thing. A well-maintained Challenger 350 with a senior crew from a Part 135 operator with a strong safety culture is a better airplane than a neglected Falcon 2000 with a junior crew and a dispatch team that misses details.
